| Retention Recommendations | Dotty Muir chaired the
Enrollment Management Council meeting and suggested that the committee
examine two important aspects of retention at WVU at Parkersburg. The first
was to examine what we are now doing well and then to make suggestions as to
what we need to add in order to increase retention. What we are now doing to aid student retention: ·1 Tutoring·2 Student Alert Form·3 Mentoring undecided and Promise Scholars·4 Reorientation Sessions·5 Student Development Classes·6 Study Skills Classes·7 Tie students to program courses·8 GUS Program·9 Student Activities·10 Clubs and Organizations·11 Financial Aid·12 Single Parent Classes·13 Child Care Center·14 Career Planning·15 Low Cost of Tuition·16 JCC family atmosphere·17 Small classes·18 Quality faculty·19 Positive community image·20 Local bus service·21 Advising Center·22 Faculty interaction with students outside classroom·23 Campus safety·24 Campus personality·25 Learning Center Activities·26 Orientation·27 Placement Testing
Suggestions were make to help improve retention. The suggestions were: ·1 Improve scheduling·2 Offer/add to weekend classes·3 Course rotation i.e. rotate morning/afternoon/ evening and day/evening. Offer same classes both fall and spring semester.·4 Offer more JCC classes.·5 Block form classes (compress classes to shorter time periods such as one weekend a month for throughout the semester but to also make sure the classes fit Federal Financial Aid guidelines.)·6 More ADS and E classes with limit on GPA requirement.·7 Research statistics on success rate in ADS classes (who succeed and who fail).·8 Add more keyboarding skills classes (1 hour class lower than CS 101).·9 Test out of CS 101 for more advanced students.·10 Begin a basic office equipment class focusing on keyboarding, fax, copier, etc.·11 Intervention – mentor for probation/suspension students.·12 Restore JCC bookstore on site.·13 Investigate less expensive avenues for book purchases.·14 Training for faculty to teach ADS and E classes.·15 Educate students on workload of ADS classes.·16 Revamp reorientation.·17 Post on a large bulletin board all fall and spring semester class changes, such as:- Schedule changes - Added classes - Closed classes - Add web access to in computers in testing center
