WVU Parkersburg Grants Council

January 29, 2004, 10:00 a.m.

President’s Conference Room

Those present were: Joe Badgley, Bill Brown, Debbie Richards, Tina Taylor, Paul Daugherty, Vijay Shah, Stephen Hupp, Mary Lott, and Patsy Bee.

Paul Daugherty called the meeting to order. He asked Dr. Badgley to provide an overview of the Grants Council and to describe its past service to the college. Joe indicated that the Grants Council was intended to provide a central registry to record grant activity at WVU Parkersburg, and to serve as a source of information for grant opportunities.

Paul noted that he would like to discuss things that have worked in the past, resources that would be useful for the future, and areas where grant funding may be needed.

Helpful information has included:

Boilerplate information provided by Public Information Office that is needed in developing a grant.

Websites that can be searched for different types of grants and provide information.

Foundation Center web page is a good source of information and The Chronicle of Higher Education highlights grant opportunities.

Suggestions for the future:

Develop location in the Library for grant funding resources.

Develop web page that will provide information on grant writing and links to funding resources.

Grant writing workshops. Presentations once or twice a year.

Provide information to faculty and staff interested in grant writing.

Recognize grant writers that were successful in obtaining grant awards for the college at the Employee Recognition each year.

Suggestions for areas of the college that need of additional grant funding included:

Learning Center, Academic Advising and Testing Center.

Carpet and tile are needed for the Children’s Room.

Parents are struggling to pay for child care – look for additional funding sources.

Technician training and $100,000 - $150,000 to complete CIT.

Identify need for furniture across the institution.

Science labs/equipment.

Funding for Professional Development for faculty and staff.

Paul thanked committee members for meeting to provide guidance and direction for grant writing possibilities and management at WVU Parkersburg. He will contact committee members regarding future meetings.
