The first meeting of West Virginia University at Parkersburg’s Board of Advisors will be held at 8 a.m., Monday (July 31) in Room 2536-38.

The Board of Advisors is part of a new governance structure. During its recent session, the Legislature approved Senate Bill 653 which redesigns the organizational structure of the state's higher education system and includes institutional-level boards.

WVU President David C. Hardesty Jr. will give a presentation at Monday’s meeting about the board’s role and the new higher education governance structure.

Each Board of Advisors consists of 15 members, including a full-time faculty member, a full-time student, a member of the classified staff and 12 lay members. At least eight of the lay members must be residents of the state, and of the lay members who are residents, at least two must be alumni of the institution. No more than a simple majority may be of the same political party.

"I am pleased that we have individuals who are committed to the health and life of WVU Parkersburg and who are willing to help us," Erik Bitterbaum, president of WVU Parkersburg, said of the board members. "I look forward to working with them as we move into the new century with its many challenges."

Members of WVU at Parkersburg’s Board of Advisors include:

Wood County: Dr. Dan Curry; Joyce Okes, interim chair; Jim Mylott; George Kellenberger; S.E. "Ed" Ball; Skip Hackworth; Trudy Seita; Joe Campbell; Robert J. D’Avria; Tony Playtis; James B. Hayhurst, Jr.; Jackson County: Jack Burlingame; Nell Higgins Orosco, Student Representative; Linda Dunlap, Faculty Representative, and August Kafer, Classified Staff Representative.

The Parkersburg regional campus board appointments are for one year until the WVU Board of Advisors becomes the WVU Board of Governors in July 2001. At that time, the WVU Board of Governors will appoint the institutional boards at each of the University’s regional campuses.
