WVU Parkersburg faculty member honored as first Bernard P. McDonough Outstanding Faculty of the Year.

A West Virginia University at Parkersburg faculty member is the first Bernard P. McDonough Outstanding Faculty of the Year honoree.

Ron Atkinson, professor of social sciences and division chair of the Social Sciences Division, was nominated for the honor by his peers.

Atkinson received a specially designed glass award and $1,000. This is the 18th time in his career that Atkinson has been recognized for his teaching abilities, the earliest of which was during his first year of teaching in 1965. 

Atkinson is retiring as chair and faculty member of the Social Sciences Division after 42 years of service.  Earlier this year, the college initiated the Atkinson Lecture Series in tribute to him. The first lecture was presented by Atkinson.

The McDonough Foundation has made a commitment to assist WVU at Parkersburg in acknowledging exceptional efforts by its faculty, noted Jenny Keup, executive director of the WVU at Parkersburg Foundation, Inc.

McDonough, a local entrepreneur, is known to have held higher education in esteem as evidenced by his generous gifts which established both the McDonough Building at Georgetown University and the McDonough Leadership Series at Marietta College.
