FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

An article by West Virginia University at Parkersburg's executive dean for academic affairs is published in the current issue of Community College Entrepreneurship.

Written by Dr. Rhonda Richards, the article, “Technical Programs: A New Approach,” details the college’s process to ensure its general education curricula prepare students with relevant knowledge and skills and support the current and future needs of the workplace.

The institution’s emphasis on technical general education effectiveness is in response to input from area industry representatives and their workplace needs for specific professional skill paths.

With state funding for the project, a team of WVU Parkersburg faculty has developed a list of general education competencies as a framework that all students will be expected to achieve.  These include communication (written and oral), computation (mathematical), collaboration (teamwork), critical thinking (problem solving) and competition (entrepreneurship).

Infusing programs with these competencies is the next step in the on-going project, Dr. Richards notes in the article.

Community College Entrepreneurship is written for community college faculty and administrators who are interested in learning about how to start an entrepreneurship education program or make the one they have better. It is published quarterly by the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship.
