FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The West Virginia University at Parkersburg Board of Governors approved an agreement Wednesday (Jan. 14) with the University of Ruse in Bulgaria, making it possible for the two institutions to establish a cooperative education project.

WVU Parkersburg Executive Dean Rhonda Richards explained to the board that the agreement between Ruse and the Parkersburg campus will facilitate transfer of credit between the two institutions.  This will allow University of Ruse students to attend WVU Parkersburg and become more familiar with the English language while taking courses in WVU Parkersburg's elementary education bachelor's degree program.

The University of Ruse offers a course of study in primary school pedagogy with foreign language, including English, as a specialization, Dr. Richards explained. The Bulgarian institution has agreed to accept specific courses from WVU Parkersburg's elementary education program so that Ruse students can spend a semester at WVU Parkersburg. The students will be immersed in English at the same time that they are earning credits toward their degrees from the University of Ruse.

In other business, it was noted that the deed transfer of real estate parcels of the Parkersburg campus and its Jackson County Center location from the WVU Board of Governors to WVU Parkersburg's local board is now complete. The property transfer is related to H.B. 3215, the state legislation which created WVU Parkersburg's localized governance structure.

The board was also notified that WVU Parkersburg has added new Certificate programs in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration; pharmacy technician, and animation, game and web design.

Also during the meeting, the college's student government association made a presentation to the board regarding its activities.
