FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

An on-line survey to collect input regarding West Virginia University at Parkersburg's name is now available on the college web site (www.wvup.edu).

The survey is designed to give area residents and the college's students, faculty and staff an opportunity to express their opinions regarding the college continuing as WVU Parkersburg or adopting a new name.

The WVU Parkersburg Board of Governors decided earlier this week to conduct an on-line survey and open forums as part of the process in determining the college's future direction and name.  The survey will be available until May 17.

"We value our community’s input.  The Board of Governors is seeking input as we prepare to decide whether or not to change WVU Parkersburg’s name," Joe Campbell, board chair said.  "Whatever action is taken, it needs to be the best long-term solution for the College, its students, its future students and the community as a whole."

Campus forums have also been set up.  Student forums will be held at 11:30 a.m., Monday (May 4); 5:30 p.m., Tuesday (May 5) and noon, Wednesday (May 6) in the student lounge.  Classified staff will conduct an open forum at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 7, in Room 1305.  Faculty will meet at 10 a.m., Monday, May 11 in Room 1305.

The survey and forums are in response to the board's request for community and campus input.  Recent legislation now in effect established  a network of independent state community and technical colleges, including WVU Parkersburg, and removed WVU's governance responsibility for WVU Parkersburg.  The law allows WVU and WVU Parkersburg to continue an affiliation.  As part of the provisions of the legislation, the WVU Parkersburg Board of Governors has until June 30 to decide whether to keep the institution's current name or adopt a new name.
