CONTACT:  Jeffrey Byrd, instructor of Theatre, 304-424-8295.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Theatre Department of West Virginia University at Parkersburg will present Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera "HMS Pinafore" on Feb. 20-22.

Curtain time is 8 p.m., Feb. 20 and 21, and 2 p.m., Feb. 22. The light opera will be performed in the college's multi-purpose room.

Admission is free.  Patrons are advised to arrive early as large crowds are expected, noted Jeffrey Byrd, theatre coordinator.

The show is being directed by Don Geibel with musical direction by Dr. H.G. Young; production and design by Byrd, and choreography by Joy Held.

"H.M.S. Pinafore" or "The Lass that Loved a Sailor" is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. The show opened in London on May 25, 1878.  It was Gilbert and Sullivan's fourth operatic collaboration.

The plot revolves around a naval captain's daughter who is in love with a common sailor, even though her father intends her to marry the First Lord of the Admiralty, the cabinet minister in charge of Britain's Royal Navy. As with most of Gilbert and Sullivan's operas, the plot twists reveal a surprise ending.
