FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEWhen members of West Virginia University at Parkersburg's Class of 2010 are conferred their diplomas Saturday (May 15), a father-son duo will receive honorary degrees as well.
WVU Parkersburg will bestow honorary Bachelor of Arts degrees to Steve and Nick Swisher during Commencement exercises. Steve will accept for both since his son Nick is in the middle of the Major League Baseball season as an outfielder for the World Series champion New York Yankees. A native of Parkersburg, Steve was a catcher for nine years in the majors and was selected to the 1976 National League's All-Star team.
Both have a connection to WVU Parkersburg. In 2007, the Wood County Commission named the roadway between Staunton Turnpike and Cedar Grove Road as Swisher Lane in honor of Steve and Nick. Swisher Lane serves as the entrance to WVU Parkersburg's campus.
Other honors to be awarded during the ceremonies will include emeritus status for three recently retired faculty members and the presentation of the Bernard P. McDonough Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year award.
WVU Parkersburg's Commencement exercises will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, (May 15), in the College Activities Center.
