WVU Parkersburg campus community mourns death of college benefactor, former Foundation board member.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The campus community of West Virginia University at Parkersburg is mourning the Dec. 3rd death of Shirley Lawrence-Berrey.
Mrs. Lawrence-Berrey was a long-time friend of the college and the WVU at Parkersburg Foundation, college officials noted.
"We are so appreciative of the contributions that Shirley made to the college," WVU Parkersburg President Marie Foster Gnage said. "She continued her husband's legacy and it became her legacy as well."
In addition to her service as a Foundation board member, she and her late husband Dr. Robert Lawrence-Berrey endowed a study abroad scholarship that has enabled more than 25 WVU Parkersburg students to travel to more than a dozen countries since its inception."Shirley contributed many years of service to the stewardship and growth of the WVU at Parkersburg Foundation,” Dr. Robert Harris, chair of the Foundation, said.
“The impact of the Lawrence-Berrey legacy at WVU Parkersburg and its Foundation has been great," he added. "Many students were provided the opportunity to experience the world through the Lawrence-Berrey Study Abroad Scholarship."
Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence-Berrey started the study abroad scholarship in 1989. Dr. Lawrence-Berrey served as chairman of the college Foundation's Board of Directors for 17 years.
Mrs. Lawrence-Berrey died Dec. 3 in Parkersburg. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 11) at Trinity Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the memorial room at the church.
