Joseph Lopez, retired U.S. Navy, will be the Commencement speaker for
the 2 p.m. ceremonies to be held in the College Activities Center.The Spring Class of 2011, the college's largest ever, includes 467 candidates for graduation. They will receive approximately 524 degrees and certificates. A record 165 candidates for graduation will be participating in the ceremonies. Faculty grand marshal for the ceremonies will be Matthew Santer with marshals Dr. Rob Anderson, Nancy Dew, and Lisa Flowers-Clements assisting. Admiral Lopez is a native of Powellton, WV. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1959 and was commissioned an ensign via the seaman-to-admiral program in 1964. He is one of only two flag officers in the history of the U.S. Navy who achieved four-star rank after direct commission from enlisted service. Admiral Lopez has received numerous honors from the state of West Virginia, including selection as the West Virginian of the Year in 1998, designation by the Governor in 1984 as a “Distinguished West Virginian”, and in 1997, the State Legislature named the Interstate 64 Bridge spanning the Kanawha River at Chelyan in his honor. He is a former vice chairman of the Board of Governors of West Virginia University. This marks WVU Parkersburg's 50th anniversary. In conjunction with the observance, the college's graduation fee was waived for the spring semester. WVU Parkersburg officials believe the fee waiver contributed to the increased participation in the ceremonies.
