About Podcasting
Introduction
Remember when Americans were perched around their radios to listen to "Fireside Chats?"  Today, we live in a multimedia world, where we are constantly exposed to a wide variety of digital media. MTV, video games, e-mail, the Web and instant messaging have been a part of our young students' lives as long as they can remember. Traditional college students are part of a new generation that is sometimes referred to as the "Digital Natives." (Prensky, October 2001.)  The challenge facing educators as a result of the digital era comes from the different cognitive thinking patterns of a new cohort of students who are developing during this period in time.

Creating digital experiences for students can seem daunting for "Digital Immigrants" who are not as comfortable with technology as some of their students.  Just because you are not part of this new generation does not mean that you are not capable of creating digital media for your students to use. Even without advanced technical skills, instructors have the ability to create audio podcasts that students can revisit repeatedly and at their convenience. The only items required are a computer with a microphone, some simple software, and a location on the Web, a feed URL, to make the file available to students.

Definition
Podcasting is the distribution of audio or video files, such as radio programs, music videos, or classroom lectures over the Internet using either RSS or Atom syndication for listening on mobile devices and personal computers. A podcast is a web feed of audio or video files placed on the Internet for anyone to download or subscribe. Podcasters' websites also may offer direct download of their files, but the subscription feed of automatically delivered new content is what distinguishes a podcast from a simple download or real-time streaming (see below). Usually, the podcast features one type of "show" with new episodes either sporadically or at planned intervals such as daily, weekly, etc. Some podcast networks exist that feature multiple shows on the same feed.  Podcasting's essence is about creating content (audio or video) for an audience that wants to listen when they want, where they want, and how they want.
