Plagiarism - What's the big deal?

Why do English professors get so upset about plagiarism?  What is the big deal?

It's all about integrity.  For a business paper, your personal integrity is called into play every time you write a sentence.

If you're willing to "lift" someone else's words and use them as your own, there is no reason to believe that you won't steal company secrets or pirate software.  It's about corporate ethics -- YOURS!

It is essential that you get into a habit of writing for business in a way that gives credit to the person who had the idea.  This shows that you value integrity and that you want your reader to know how to find out more about the issue at hand.

Summarize in your own words.  No matter how well worded something may be, it is best not to include long quotes or to plagiarize.

Use the alien approach and summarize what the author said in your own words.  Even though you may think that the way the author put it was excellent, it's better to summarize the concept in your own words.

This is how you demonstrate to your reader that you, in fact, "got it" and understand what you read.
