Take your time!

To achieve the best, most positive tone for each assignment, you must take your time when writing! You can't be in a big hurry. This is particularly important as you are developing your writing skills early on.

The very best scenario is to follow these steps:

  • Plan your writing. Jot down notes about your issue.  Create a short outline of what you want to say BEFORE you begin the narrative.
  • At the computer, create your first draft. Just clunk it out! Start by saving the document with a name that you will recognize later!
  • Proofread the draft while it is still on the screen.
  • Print a copy of the first draft. Label the draft with the name of the document and the name of the disk on which it is stored.

The next day (or a few days later!), proofread the document again.

Proofread once for content. Does it fulfill the objective?  Does it address each question or issue that was presented in the case/exercise material?  Does it make sense? What about the tone? Is it positive? Check the facts (dates, addresses, financial amounts, etc.) against any specifics given in the case.

Proofread again for mechanics and format.  Read it OUT LOUD AND BACKWARDS to catch errors in spelling or typos that the computer may not have caught.

When you use this multi-day process, your documents will be better than if you create and proofread the document all in one setting. Don't procrastinate!
