I earned an Associate of Science in Nursing (ADN) from WVU Parkersburg in 2018, and I’m enrolled now in the RN-BSN program. This college was my first choice. My mother attended, and I’d taken some classes here previously, so the campus was familiar to me. I’d also heard from so many others how solid the nursing program was, and the tuition and location were ideal for me.
Earning an ADN at WVU Parkersburg helped me secure a position as a “daytime” nurse (which is highly unheard of as a new graduate) on the busiest, advanced care unit at Camden Clark Medical Center.
When I decided to return to school and began the ADN program, my spouse provided the only source of income for my family. I was also pregnant with my third child and struggled a lot with my health, making it challenging to stay focused, but I did. There were many times I was unsure how I would make it through.
The nursing program was tough. The program is recognized nationally, it’s graduate NCLEX results are well above the national average, and hospitals in the area compete with one another recruiting nurses from the college. I know that there are many competitive nursing programs out there. However, I do not see how I could have been more prepared than I was when I graduated from WVU Parkersburg. It was, by far, one of the most challenging goals I’d undertaken in my entire life. If it weren’t for my faith, the support of my instructors, and a handful of various other college employees (Dr. Mary Hetrick and Mr. Kurt Klettner included), I’m not sure how I would have finished my ADN.
The employees at WVU Parkersburg are committed to the success of their students, no matter what it takes… or how it takes them from their own personal lives. The passion they have for each person attempting to better themselves is like nothing I’ve ever seen. How I was so fortunate to come across the best of the best, I’m still uncertain. Blessed is the only adjective I can think of to describe it.
I will forever be indebted to WVU Parkersburg. I am now trying to repay my debt in gratitude to the college and other students any way I can. I recently joined the Nursing Advisory Board Council, as I want to be involved more with the college and do anything that I can to help my community. It is so important to give back, especially when you’ve been given so much.
If you find yourself struggling, hang in there. Do not give up because you can do it! If I can do it, anyone can. WVU Parkersburg provides so many resources that can and will aid in your success.
